125 Years of Tradition – 125 Years of Innovation
The TU Ilmenau looks back on a long tradition in the training of engineers. It began in 1894 with the opening of the private educational institution Thüringisches Technikum in the heart of Ilmenau. A prestigious technical university in GDR times, it received the status of Technical University in 1992. Today one of the most modern technical universities in Germany is located in the city centre and on the new university campus on the outskirts of the city.
Internationality and Diversity
In research, the scientists at the TU Ilmenau cooperate with over 140 universities and research institutes worldwide and with over 300 commercial enterprises, including global players such as BMW, Bosch, Jenoptik, Telekom and SAP.
In teaching, the TU Ilmenau maintains cooperation agreements with more than 110 universities in 50 countries and offers ten international study programs with double degrees. This is another reason why TU Ilmenau is extremely attractive for students from all over the world: More than a third of all first-year students regularly come from abroad.
